Created in 2010 by poet Terry Jude Miller, literature professor Dr. Stephen Souris, poet Anne McCrady and Texas Poet Laureate Karla Morton and produced by InSpiritry, this years-long monthly series of audio interview programs was a first in Texas--bringing Texas poets and Texas poems.
Each 20-30 minute podcast featured a casual interview with a well-known Texas poet. Discussions focused on the poetry landscape of Texas and about a guest-selected poem written and read by another Texas poet. Guests also shared a poem of their own. Host for the podcasts was Texas Woman's University English professor Dr. Stephen Souris. The sessions were recorded at Texas Christian University in the KTCU radio station studio as well as in other Texas public radio studios. Though discontinued due to lack of funding, all ten Texas Poets Podcast sessions are posted here at InSpiritry, and also on the Texas Poets Podcast website, on SoundCloud and on iTunes!
Full of poetic inspiration, insightful critique, and wonderful poetry, these recordings of guest and featured poets continue to be a resource for aspiring poets and students alike!
Texas Poets Podcast guests included Texas Poets Laureate, professors, singer-songwriters, internationally known poets and Texas icons.
The first podcast featured Texas Poet Laureate Karla K. Morton and her selection of a poem by University of Houston professor and award-winning poet, Tony Hoagland. Other guests included 2005 Texas Poet Laureate Alan Birkelbach, 2008 Texas Poet Laureate, Larry D. Thomas, Lone Star College professor and 2011 Texas Poet Laureate Dave Parsons, Texas State University professor and internationally known poet Cyrus Cassells, Oklahoma Poet Laureate and Texas native Nathan Brown, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley instructor and Texas Institute of Letters honoree Katherine Hoerth, retired Midwestern State University professor and 2000 Texas Poet Laureate, James Hoggard, University of Houston Downtown professor and Houston Poet Laureate, Robin Davidson, and Writers Garrett founder, Thea Temple.
